You may use the following combinations of keystrokes to produce Umlaute in word documents.
On a PC, first, make sure Num Lock is on. Press and hold the ALT key down while you key in the numbers using the number pad on the right side of the keyboard.
On a MAC, hold the first two keys down simultaneously, release, and then type the letter you wish to be accented.
